Dr.Hippo childrens books- review and giveaway!
Dr.Charlotte Cowan- pediatrician- sent me a set of her beautiful children's books. Her Dr.Hippo series [named for the recurring character] are written to 'entertain, educate and comfort', and she accomplishes these goals superbly.
As the mother to three children, a faculty member of Harvard Medical School, a previous English teacher and social worker, Dr.Cowan combined her education with life experience to create touching and educational books that are great for the whole family.
Each hardcover book comes with a sturdy parent guide tucked into a pocket on the back cover; the guides elaborate on details of the illness featured in the book and advises on what sort of care is needed and when to call for help.
Dr.Cowan approaches sickness the way you should- with common sense and a calm manner.
Each story explains the illness in a way that reassures a child: it confirms what they're experiencing, tells them what to expect, and tells them what will make them feel better. Many of the stories feature animal children anxious about missing a big event and Dr.Cowan addresses their concerns in ways I think would help 'real' children worrying about the same thing.

It's hard to say which book is my favorite as each story is captivating. I think Katie caught a cold deserves a special mention because of Dr.Cowan's acknowledgement of antibiotic over-use. She advises that most colds are viral, so antibiotics usually wont help. As antibiotic over-prescription [along with unfinished prescriptions among other things] is causing serious problems, I am very passionate about this issue and was thrilled to read her advisements.
The five books in the Dr.Hippo series are:
The little elephant with the big earache
Eddie the elephant risks missing his birthday when his ear starts to hurt.
The moose with loose poops
Miles the moose is on his way to a fishing adventure when diarrhea [and vomiting] hits.
Sadie's sore throat
Sadie the giraffe comes down with strep throat and might not make it to the fair.
Katie caught a cold
A sinus infection poses problems for Katie the polar bear's upcoming skating performance.
Peeper has a fever
Peeper the frog develops a high fever just days before his diving competition.
We will treasure these books: aside from the well written stories, each is beautifully illustrated with great attention to detail.
I highly recommend you beg, borrow or

To be VERY honest from what I've read so far, this is a really informational blog, and this woman knows what she's talking about! It's not because she's a doctor, but I feel like I can really digest and use her tips/advice/knowledge.
