Cloth Diapering overview- answering all your questions!
Being a ‘green’ mama means that I’m all for cloth diapering. When I first looked into it I was a bit concerned about the extra work it’d take, the ‘gross’ factor, and whether I’d be jabbing my baby with pins.
Cloth diapering is NOT what it used to be- there’s a huge range of diapers available, and very few of them involve pins!
I wanted to give you all a run down on the options available so you could be more informed [and therefore more willing/able to help out Mother Earth- did you know a disposable diaper takes 500-1000 years to decompose?! That’s not when it’s wrapped in a plastic bag, which takes an additional 1000 years!]
Diaper choices:
-->The absolute basic is a flat or a pre-folded diaper. A flat diaper is the traditional kind- a sheet of sorts that you fold into a diaper shape, pin onto baby, and wrap with a waterproof cover. A pre-folded [“pre-fold”] diaper is very similar, but it’s been sewn so it holds its partially folded shape [this is still flat and rectangular, but it requires a few less folds]. Again, this requires pinning and a waterproof cover. Both a flat and a pre-fold generally need to be lined with an bsorbent layer to soak up the messes.
One handy ‘pin’ available nowadays is called the ‘Snappi’ and it’s a plastic tipped rubber T that grips the diaper shut [each wing and the front bottom]; a great invention, but as I learned, it doesn’t grip all fabrics equally- it didn’t work well with flannel, but it was fantastic with a more open weave.
-->The next step up is the fitted diaper: these look a lot more like a disposable in the way that they’re elasticized around the thighs [and generally the waist], and close with Velcro tabs [or occasionally snaps or ties]. They are often made from flannel, but are becoming more commonly available in bamboo. They usually require an additional absorbent insert and must be covered with a waterproof cover to prevent leakage onto clothing.
Waterproof coverings are made from many different materials and are available in several styles. The most common style is very similar to a fitted diaper without the absorbent materials [it’s elasticized around the legs and waist and snaps or velcros closed], but they also come in pull on styles- some with legs, some without.
Commonly these are made of a vinyl or vinyl backed fabric, though they’re also available in wool, fleece and nylon.
A few diaper covers are able to be used as swim diapers- I’ve invested $15 in one cute fabric swim diaper that’s lasted me a lot longer than a whole package of commercial swim diapers would! [and the same diaper has fit Ladybug from 3-14 months!] These are great because they don’t soak up water [so they fit better] and there aren’t leaks. They’re also super cute!
-->One more step up is the pocket diaper: named for the space between the waterproof outer and the soft inside, a pocket diaper is ‘stuffed’ with an absorbent insert. These are then put on like a disposable [either Velcro or snaps] and you’re ready to go.
These are most commonly lined with a microfleece layer which allows the moisture to wick away from the baby’s bottom and stay dry.
The inserts are quite often made from microfibre, hemp, bamboo or flannel.
Many pocket diapers are available as ‘one-size’- this means that the diaper is easily adaptable to fit all sizes of babies [generally 8lbs through 35]. Adjustments are usually made via snaps. If the diaper is not "one-size" you'll have to buy another set of diapers once the baby outgrows the first set- there are generally 2-3 sets you'll need until potty training [so long as your child is not a preemie or is more than 35 lbs at potty training].
-->The easiest diaper of all is the all-in-one [AIO]: these are used exactly like a disposable. Again, these are quite frequently lined with microfleece, though a simple flannel or cotton also occurs. There is no stuffing or lining required [unless your child is an exceptionally heavy wetter], and you can choose between Velcro/snap closures. AIOs are also readily available in the ‘one-size’ style, making it a diaper to fit your child the entire way through to potty training.
You might be wondering why there's even a choice at hand- wouldn't all parents choose to go with the latter? Price is always a concern, and with each step up the ladder the price increases. As more options are becoming available however, the gap is getting smaller: a bamboo prefold can cost as much [or more] than a fitted diaper or more than a mom-made AIO!
The Velcro/snap closure debate is a very personal choice: when we first started with Ladybug we were using the Snappi [with our pre-folds] and then Velcro with our fitteds. When we moved onto pocket diapers we chose Velcro tabs as it was the ultimate attach and go- Ladybug started rolling very early on and was a terror to change so whatever was the quickest was our choice!
However… she’s learned now how to undo the Velcro [and takes great joy in doing so], so we’re re-thinking our choice. We now have a few snap diapers, and while it’s taking us a bit longer to secure them [also because we haven’t practiced nearly as long], they’re on for good and we don’t have to worry about her pooing on the floor again *sigh*.
We have friends that are dominantly one or the other and wouldn’t change if they were paid to! It’s truly a choice you need to think about and talk over with those who’ll be helping with the changes. For us a mix of both has been a happy medium!
-->One more diaper choice is for during potty training- there are several 'pull up' varieties available with less absorption to fit well under clothing. There are also varieties available for nights [more absorbent].
Liners: Some parents choose to use liners in their cloth diapers, and there are definitely valid reasons for doing so:
-some are worried about stains. Stains are quite common in flannel or cotton diapers but rarely occur in fleece lined/microfleece.
-it can make cleaning up poo a lot easier. If you’re one to rinse out the diapers beforehand it’s easier to rinse a single piece of fabric rather than a whole diaper!
-if diaper cream is being used it prevents transfer to the diaper which can ruin the absorbency and sometimes leave a gross remnant smell. [please see the ‘benefits of cloth diapers’ below for more on diaper rashes]
-a microfleece liner in a cotton/flannel diaper does what most pocket/AIOs do- it wicks the moisture away from the skin allowing it to absorb into the materials below.
You can frequently find packages of diaper liners for sale- there are several disposable varieties available [flush after use] and bundles you can purchase at baby stores. The disposable ones worked for us certainly, but it seemed silly to waste $8 every few weeks on something unnecessary. We looked at the bundles sold at our babystore [$6 for 6- washable and re-useable], and realized I could make a dozen for about $2! Go to your fabric store [or Wal-Mart] and buy some microfleece- cut this into strips that will fit widthwise in your diaper [cut about an inch smaller to reduce liner from hanging out] and as long/short as you’d find useful. You don’t have to worry about microfleece shrinking, so cut exactly to size.
Cloth wipes are a decision we also made to use, and we’ve used a variety over the past 14 months: we started off using baby washcloths. These worked great! They’re a perfect size, readily available, and they maintain their shape [ok, the ones with a fabric border did- the ones that are just serged around the edge rolled up and were a pain so were donated!]. They stack well and grip the poo superbly! Once I used these I’d shudder when I used disposable wipes- they don’t work properly.
Lately I’ve taken to using the ‘newborn’ inserts that came with my pocket diapers. These are smaller microfibre inserts that are meant for tiny babies and/or additional layers for heavy wetters. They’re extremely soft and the fabric cleans beautifully! These are also terrific for cleaning faces after lunch [the only cloth Ladybug doesn’t pull away from!] and for doing chores [obviously after being sanitized!].
Cloth wipes can be stored wet [and wrung out before use], sprayed with water/solution, or used dry. We commonly use them dampened in the sink on the way to grabbing a diaper. Many mothers use solution on their wipes [several recipes are available- google them], but on the few occasions we needed them we chose to add a drop of babywash to our damp cloth instead.
Some mothers make their own wipes or scope out a perfect sized washcloth to fit folded and stacked in a wipe warmer; I haven’t tried these myself, and as the wife of a firefighter I’m a bit weary of such a device, but I’ve been assured they’re safe if checked regularly for fluid and I’m sure babies appreciate a nice warm wipe in the middle of the night [and moms won’t have to wait for the tap water to warm up like I do!] (wow- run on sentence!)
Care:
Cleaning cloth diapers is very easy. To store between washes, keep them in a closed container: we bought a large fliptop garbage can [test to make sure it shuts smoothly and securely] that holds 18 pocket diapers and the required cloth wipes. For travel there are ‘wet bags’ available that are generally made out of the same material as the waterproof diaper outer/covers. These keep the moisture/smells where they belong. Wet bags are also available for lining diaper pails- something I keep meaning to buy [grab the bag, empty it then toss in with the diapers!] but haven’t ‘gotten around to’. I’ve been assured they’re great and well worth the purchase though do your research- some brands don’t hold up as well as others.
Before storing, if there’s poo on the diaper, do your best to remove it. If you’ve ever read the back of a disposable diaper package you’ll know you’re supposed to remove the feces from the diaper before tossing. How many parents actually do?! This poo will eventually seep into our underground water systems and pollute our environment so please, even if you stick with disposables, shake the poo into the toilet before tossing!
Back to cloth diapering- if the poo is quite smeared there are tools available to help- there’s a diaper sprayer that attaches to the toilet’s water line to assist. Honestly, with the newborn poo there isn’t much you can do, so toss it into the bucket.
When you’re ready to wash, check the instructions. There are a few different suggestions out there, but the most common are to: wash cold [1/2 regular amount of detergent], wash warm or hot [second half of detergent], extra rinse, tumble dry [with no fabric softeners!]. Heat breaks down fabrics, so it’s better to hang to dry your clothing than tumble [for the environment and your bills too!], but I recommend doing so especially for your covers if possible- the fabrics these are made of are most susceptible to damage and will last longer if hung to dry whenever possible. I’ve tumbled mine for the past year and they’re holding up tremendously well, so don’t think if you don’t hang them they’ll fall apart in a month!
If you’re using anything but the AIOs the diapers will require some sort of assembly after drying: some parents prefer to pre-assemble while others are happy to put together on the go!
It’s not recommended to use actual laundry ‘soap’, but rather detergent, and there are some preferred brands/types. Again, google the information if you’re curious: I use Purex [the white bottle] as it’s biodegradable, fabric softener and brightener free and reasonably priced.
It’s also not recommended to use bleach or vinegar as both break down the materials [especially in the waterproof layers], nor is fabric softener advised- if you’re an avid cloth diaperer it’s often recommended that you refrain from using it at all as remnants on the walls of your dryers will build up on the diapers and can cause repelling issues. For natural bleaching of stains lay the diapers out in the sun [it works incredibly well!] and for fabric softeners you might try ‘laundry balls’ or a splash of vinegar [in your regular laundry, not the diapers, and no, this won’t make your laundry smell like vinegar!].
There are several benefits to cloth diapering:
- You’ll save a ton of money! Even if you purchase the most expensive cloth diapers [say $25/diaper- in Canada it’ll be around $30 for top of the line] and buy 18 to make a good two days’ worth [1-1.5 days with a newborn] you’ll spend $450. You could go buy about 20 packages of disposables for that price but you’ll be throwing them all away and they won’t even last you a year. Cloth diapers will last you all the way to toddlerhood AND you can use them for your 2nd, 3rd [etc] children. Cloth diapers also have excellent resale value [which is a great thing to consider when starting out]. So, you’ll *only* be saving a few hundred dollars for one child, but you’ll be diapering the next one free [save for about 12c/load for soap and water]! Depending on the diapers you buy and where you live, you could make back up to 75% of your original costs when you resell!
If you use cloth wipes too you’re going to be laughing when you see the ‘deal’ of $10 for a box of slimy disposables… cloth wipes grip the poo so much better and you choose what cleaner [if any] is used. $10/month=$120 over a year that isn’t necessary! - Your baby won’t be sitting on/absorbing chemicals from disposables; you choose the detergent the diaper is washed in and whether to use bleach or not [not generally needed nor recommended]. They also keep the baby’s bum cooler which has been linked to lower health risks [I’m not going to go into detail on the hazards of disposables- if you want to know google it!]
- The incidence of diaper rash is significantly lower. This isn’t just my experience, it’s been proven!
- Babies are potty trained earlier than those that wear disposables because they can feel when they ‘go’. I’m personally wondering if this will change with the ‘stay dry’ liners of pocket/AIOs now, but it’s been proven true in the past, so I’ve chosen to share it now.
- Your baby will have a way cuter bum than the other baby down the street. AND you can match the diaper to the outfit! No more having to find that stupid diaper cover that came with the sundress! Seriously, the patterns available make some women gaga- it can become an obsession [don’t say I didn’t warn you!].
I’ve included everything I can think of: if you have any questions or additional comments, please leave me a note or send me an email! I’d be happy to help and/or include your additions :)
Musicbox CD review and giveaway
Mary Kaye sent me two of her CDs to enjoy: Music Box and Spin Your Web.
Music Box is her latest creation, due to be officially released on July 2nd.
Mary Kaye is a mother of two girls [another 'mompreneur!] who holds a BA in Theatre and a MA in Elementary Education- quite a fitting combo for a child entertainer!
I thought there were some sweet touches that she included- hand drawn [by Mary Kaye herself] pictures decorated the Spin Your Web CD; local artist/art teacher Rhonda Mann illustrated the newest Music Box CD and cover.
She's got a very distinct and different 'flavor' to her music. I'm going to borrow a quote from her website from Parenting Magazine [July 2006] because it's dead on:
"Kaye offers a respite from standard kids' music with lovely, warbly vocals that rival Natalie Merchant. Her songs, at once silly and melodious, provide an insider look at kid culture."
As well as being drawn to entertaining kids, Mary Kaye is a very sweet person. From her comments about my blog to her understanding with my lack of internet connection, she's been a very warm and welcoming woman.
She's generously offered two of my readers a copy of her newest CD 'Music Box' to enjoy with their family! [You get to hear it before it's released!]
For your first entry:
Visit Mary Kaye's website and tell me something you learned [that I haven't yet told you!]: your favorite track from one of her CDs, something else about her, etc.
For additional entries you may:
-Follow me on Twitter. Once you're a follower you can tweet this giveaway once per day for bonus entries

Saturday's Natural Cleaning- artifical plants
I know how dusty fake plants can get; wiping them with a damp cloth doesn't seem to do a whole lot good as the film sort of bunches and leaves a smear behind.
How on earth can you clean into all the crevices without wrecking the plants that can cost so much?
In a bag [or a pillowcase] toss a handful of rice. Add your plant, give the top of the bag a twist [leaving air in to 'puff' the bag], and shake! The rice will gently buff away the dust and grime.
Once you're finished cleaning your artificial plants, be sure to re-use the rice to clean out the bottom of your vases too [see here for how to]!

Winner announcement for the Mother-in-Law's Manual
5-in-1 Tasty Baker: review and giveaway!
LC Premiums [Pop Art Toaster and 5-in-1 Tasty Baker] sent me a really neat gadget that's perfect for desperate moms of picky eaters- I got the try the standard 5-in-1 Tasty Baker.
The way I’d describe this is a like a waffle maker- you pour in the batter and you get a shaped treat. The neat thing about this though is the shapes you get!! You can make cakes, brownies, pancakes, even eggs with this!
Here’s the company photo of my machine:
I tested it out with some lemon cake mix. I was really impressed that the company included not only a batter scoop [with a pouring edge] but also a dual-head brush to clean the crevices. This likely wouldn’t have crossed my mind until afterwards when I was trying to clean the dips and grooves, but it’s been really convenient.
I plugged in the machine and saw the red light glow- this means that the power is on. I turned the dial to ‘3’ [I figured it’d be a good start] and waited. Less than a minute later the green light turned on indicating that it was heated and ready to go- I was blown away at how fast it heated up.
At first I was cautious and carefully poured the batter in, slowing filling up each nook and cranny. By the time I got from the left to the right side of the machine my cakes were already cooking! The first batch didn’t rise as well as it should have- not only did I not fill each shape enough [I recommend at least up to the top, if not over] but I was also constantly opening the lid to see if they were done yet. [Yep, I know- patience is a virtue]
For the second batch I simply dropped dipperfuls into the wells and shut the lid- I timed 7 minutes [1/3 of the cupcake time, as recommended by the box] and opened. Voila! Success!
Now I’m going to show you another test I did… I doubt the company would recommend this, but I had to give it a try- I filled each segment up REALLY full…and basically flooded the plate. Here’s a picture of what it looked like cooked, and here you can see how easy it was to peel the excess off!
I personally choose to use plastic/silicone utensils when dealing with metal- I don’t like to scratch my nonstick surfaces. A plastic fork will work wonders when removing the tiny details [though I must say, I didn’t have any issues with things sticking, even after a few uses- the cakes were obviously a bit hot once cooked though and the use of a fork was appreciated!]
All in all this is a fun kitchen gadget- I know when Ladybug’s older she’ll like having the ‘cool’ mom who makes fun breakfast for her friends after a sleepover [okay, so I doubt I'll be the cool mom, but I can still make a cool breakfast/after school treat!]
I’m looking forward to making several of the birthday cakes for her birthday next year- I’m going to set out bowls of icing and paintbrushes and let the kids go wild. Wouldn’t that be a hit?!
I know once Ladybug hits the princess adoration stage I’ll be getting one of these too:
Would that not be the coolest party addition? You could make pink castle or flowers and set the girls down to decorate them!
For another party treat you can also make brownies in the shape of these or the Mickey set and sandwich them over icecream [YUM]. My poor hubby- he thought this was cool [and was reeeally intrigued by the thought of cake ready in 7 minutes], but I don’t think he’s impressed with my desire to have three separate machines!
While the Tasty Baker itself is actually smaller than I anticipated, it still takes up room… so the only downside I could think of is that the plates aren’t interchangeable. Now that would be neat.
Other than that I give it two thumbs up!
Something else that I love about this company that I can't help but mention: Linda Carlish, the inventor of the Pop Art Toaster is a mama to a toddler! Yep, another great 'mom-invention'!
Want to try one too? LC Premiums has very generously offered one lucky reader a 5-in-1 Tasty Baker of their own! Yes, how great is that?!
The mandatory first entry is:
1.Go to the Pop Art Toaster site and tell me what your favorite item is and what specific design [if applicable].
or
2.What other designs would you like to see? [for either the Tasty Baker or the Pop Art Toaster]

Telus Rant followup
Last week I wrote about my experience dealing with Telus; I had a horrible conversation with a 'supervisor' that left me upset, frusterated, and angry.
In my post I said that if a Telus employee took care of the issue and offered a sincere apology I'd follow up on my original post.
That's what I'm doing now!
I was pleasantly surprised to receive an email from Bonnie the other day; we finally spoke this evening and I was offered a sincere and genuine apology. This was greatly appreciated Bonnie, and I thank you for it.
After all this am I a customer? Not yet. I am re-considering though.

A note about entering contests
After drawing for my most recent winners I felt I had to make a separate post to highlight the 'ins and outs' of entering blog contests- many potential winners disqualify themselves without realizing!
First of all- the first entry is just that: the first entry to be done. All 'bonus' or 'additional' entries must be done after that first entry has been completed. If you really want to, you can do the mandatory entry last, but if you haven't done it you won't be named as a winner. I'm sorry, but 'thems the rules'.
Secondly- please please please make sure I've got a way to contact you! If you aren't a blogger [or signed in as one], even if you type your name into the box you're still an 'anonymous' entry. Make sure your email is contained in at least one of your entries, or else I can't contact you!
If you're a blogger with a private email [it's not listed on your profile or there's no email link], leave your email in an entry. Again, if I can't contact you you cannot win.
Thirdly- If you're reading through the comments and notice blank entries or duplicate posts [not valid ones], or comments such as "I want to win" without fulfilling the mandatory requirements, rest assured that these will not be named winners, regardless of whether their comment number is picked. I DO check to make sure all requirements are fulfilled
and finally- make sure you do what you say you've done! Whether it's signing up for the company's emails, following the blog, subscribing to the emails [be sure you've confirmed your subscription] I WILL check before naming you a winner.
Thank you for taking the time to visit Household Treasures and I hope your stay is a lucky one! Keep entering those contests; I hope to be in contact soon naming you a winner :)
If you've got any further questions on contest entries- rules, how to, etc, please either read the explanations at the bottom of the page [in the yellow bar] or contact me.
We have our winners!

Winding up the Summer Warm-up with a bit of Romance! Ageless perfume
My romance recommendation for today (already the last day of the party!) is to go on a date with your hubby. Make it work how you can: go for brunch instead of dinner, enjoy a picnic, or have a ‘date night’ in while the kiddos are asleep.
On your date you’ll be wanting to spruce up a bit, and I love smelling good- it’s that final touch that puts all your hard work together! I’ve got a perfume you’ll love to try:
No matter how old or how young, we all want to be youthful and cling to what remains. Harvey Prince has designed a perfume that will help with that illusion: this isn’t an age serum, rather it’s based on studies done on ‘youthful’ smells versus, well, the opposite! These studies are more than the differences between perfume purchased and age ranges, they're actually based on information about when"neonal" [a body chemical] breaks down and produces gassy undertones- this rarely happens in your 20s to 30s, but is quite prominent in your 40s and later, and is what creates that strong odor so common among the elderly.
The perfume that combats all this is called 'Ageless Fantasy'.
Pink grapefruit, mango, pomegranate, jasmine and musk have all been clinically proven to make you smell younger; these have been blended into a beautiful perfume that rejuvenates. Here’s a quote from the website “Men will be reminded of when they were "dating". Women will feel energized”-> I liked the sounds of that!
I was sent a bottle of Ageless to try, and I was pleasantly surprised! I am a very picky perfume gal- many scents irritate me, and I hate anything too sweet. This was a lovely mix of everything- hard for me to describe (though I'd say the website's description is accurate), but something I truly enjoy!
The bottle itself I also quite like- I've never been a big fan of the oddly shaped [and awkward] bottles that have been coming out lately- this is more elegant and modest and I'm quite happy to have it displayed on my bathroom counter.
Intrigued? It’s definitely worth a try!
One lucky reader of mine is going to try it for free… that’s right, a $120 bottle of Ageless Fantasy perfume will be sent to one lucky winner!

Bringing the spark back- Lauren Nicole Jewelry!
When a relationship has cooled off slightly a great way to bring back a bit of the spark is let your partner know how much you love them/how much you care/how proud you are to be with them!
Denise, the creator of Lauren Nicole Gifts has designed something to help do this!
To start, take a look at what she made me:
Isn’t it beautiful? What's even more gorgeous to me is the fact that those are Fireman’s and my initials with our wedding date and birthstones> I’m more than a mom or blogger: I’m a wife and I’m darn proud to be married to my husband.
Denise makes beautiful items for everyone though; married or not, children or not, there’s something for everyone in her shop. Don’t believe me? Go take a look at these coffee travel mugs or even the dog collars!
I haven’t taken my necklace off since I got it. I simply love it! The pendant is sterling silver and hand stamped- I chose a longer ball-chain necklace (19”- also sterling silver) and it's a perfect length for me.
It was a pleasure working with Denise and she certainly makes a quality product!
She’s very generously offered one lucky reader a necklace like mine [though of course personalized for you!]: a ‘Hand Stamped Silver Wedding or Anniversary Necklace’.

Focusing on Fun... Durex's new inventions!
Fireman and I had fun testing out my Shunga gift pack the other night, but we also had a couple of other products to test:
Durex sent us their new 'Quiver' and 'Utopia' to take for a ride.
Quiver is basically lubricant packaged in a semi-round container and is meant to be frozen. When solid, it's the perfect item to get your partner's nerves [the good ones!] tingling as you give them a massage. These 'cubes' won't stick or burn like regular ice cubes... and if you don't use a full one you can refreeze it [up to 6 times!]
The lubricant itself is thicker than most and really long lasting. A lot of fun for sure!
Utopia is the product that deserves a standing 'O'vation in my books! It's a 'female arousal gel' and contains ingredients that provide both a cooling, tingling, and warming sensation all at once. It also contains L-arginine which helps to enhance these sensations and make the whole experience more enjoyable.
It comes in a glass container with an optional pump top- definitely the most modest of other products available!
So that's what the package says anyways... what does real life experience say? It's worth it. Every. single. penny.
Sooo.. enough about me. How about we talk about the five winners that'll be each be receiving a box of Quiver AND Utopia!!!
That's right; Durex is going to make five of my readers very happy.
First of all though- all my US readers [sorry fellow Canadians]: if you're interested in $25 in Durex coupons go to the site here. You'll get a mini magazine with relationship tips and the coupons- they won't bug you afterwards either [they've promised!].
For your first mandatory entry you have a choice between two options. If you do both leave one extra comment telling me you did, 'cause it'll earn you a bonus entry!
1. Pick your favorite item from their lubricants or toys and tell me why it's your fave.
2. Check out their Sexual Wellbeing Global Survey and tell me something you learned [can't be the first fact!]
Once you've done one or both of the above you can gain additional entries by:
-Grabbing my button [bonus entry if you grab both!]
-Blogging about my Summer Warm-up [2 bonus]-if you're not a blogger you can do the same thing, but post it as your status on Facebook.
-Being a follower on Google Friends and/or on Twitter
-Being an email subscriber

Contest is open to both US and Canada until 6pm PST on June 6th. Winner will be randomly selected via random.org and will be emailed immediately. 72 hours are allowed to claim your prize, or I will re-select!
Saturday's Natural Cleaning tips- natural bleach!
When using cloth diapers you inevitably run into a few stains, but same goes for if you have kids in your house at all!
I'm not a fan of using bleach, but what other alternative is there? Think back to the 'olden days':
Hang your clothes out to dry!
Cloth diapering mamas have likely heard this before- leave your diaper inserts out in the sun for a few hours and the stains will have disappeared. Same goes for sheets, towels, etc etc!
For stubborn stains try what was used as a natural hair lightener [wonder why!]- lemon juice! Add a touch of lemon juice onto a stain and leave in the sun. Be amazed when you pull it in several hours later with only a hint of sweet lemon remaining. This works especially well with fruit or wine stains.
Please be careful with this- obviously dark clothing will fade, and lemon juice used on a color will result in a lighter patch.
This is best used on whites only.
What a great excuse to lie around this long weekend! :)
The Rosemary Company review [Baby shower decorations]
The Rosemary Company sent me these cute little Pea Pod "Bath Bomb" Bubblers to test out- they’re normally sold as a favor for shower gifts [cute idea, no?!]. Each one comes with a little card and a poem- for twin/triplets the poems are customized to indicate the special number.
The Pea Pod Bath Bubblers come with three shrink wrapped light green bath bombs, wrapped in an adorable green fleece ‘pod’. I think these would be sweet as shower gifts/place settings, but also as a decoration on a wrapped gift!
Along the same theme they’ve also got pea pod salt and pepper shakers, playing cards, soap, key chains, etc. While multiples of 12 or more are encouraged, ordering as ‘samples’ allow for smaller quantity sales.
The only downside to these was the amount of packaging [actually I should also note that at first I thought these smelled gross- it was actually the original packaging lingering- but this wore off once unwrapped]- this single pea pod arrived in a surprisingly large box, was wrapped in a plastic bag, and the three bath bombs were shrink wrapped together [as well as being individually shrink wrapped].
I think they could do with significantly less packaging, but other than that they're really cute!
The Rosemary Company is definitely a great place to go for unique shower decorations… or wedding/birthday/engagement parties!
For Fathers’ Day The Rosemary Company is not only offering a 10% discount code off certain Fathers Day items, but they're also hosting a contest… so go on by to check it out and enter to win a "I'm the coach" t-shirt. Go here, scroll down, and click on the info about the contest. They're giving away 10 tees in total.

Telus horrors- anyone else dealt with this?!
Wow.
I am shocked at the horrible customer service I just received.
We're moving- we were supposed to be nearly to our new home right now, but there were some complications [not to mention being on hold for over an hour].
I originally sent a service request to Telus via the internet last night [21st] requested my phone/net to be set up on the 23rd. I got a call back this afternoon [even though I'd requested the morning] and was informed I'd be getting charged $100 for installation plus $19/half hour the guy was there. WHAT?! We'd used Shaw before and installation was free!
Anyways- I called our landlords to double check whether there was a jack we'd missed. Apparently there was, and if not, our landlord is actually certified to install one [wish I'd known that in advance!]. So I called Telus back to confirm my booking.
This is where the hours of wasted time happened- each step seemed to leave me on hold for 20-30 minutes! Not a big deal; I finished packing, wrangled Ladybug, etc during my waits.
We got to the end of the process to be told I'd have my services installed on the 29th. WHAT?! Why did an hour between calls [mind you- this was an hour difference to the start of the call] equal 6 whole days to wait?!
I politely told the woman on the line that I needed something sooner; if my daughter was to choke, how would I call 911?! It's not safe for my family to live in a home without phone access. I wasn't even considering my mental state [away from my internet!]. She explained that things were done by computer, so she had no say.
I asked if I could please speak to the supervisor. The woman I had been speaking to was really polite btw: she was hard to understand at times, but sweet none the less. Anyways, so I went on hold and finally spoke to the supervisor.
I briefly explained the situation and why I was concerned. Right off the bat the man was rude. I have no idea why- I was extremely polite and wasn't demanding in the least; I was simply asking for him to listen to my experience. I repeated why it was important to install my phone sooner, and his response was ruder than the last time.
I was shocked at this point how the conversation was going: how do people like him stay employed?
It got to the point that I asked if this was really how he thought Telus wanted to start off a new relationship with a potential customer- I had never used Telus before, and though I've heard some awful things, had decided to use them [no, I didn't tell him that- but he knew I was a new customer]. He rudely responded once again, and I told him that I was a blogger; I have a good following, and if word of mouth wasn't bad enough, to consider the number of people I'd connect with this way.
I'm not willing to say what his responses were- not only will they get me riled up again [ and crying! Seriously, the guy was an absolute ass.], but it wouldn't do any good.
Honestly, does anyone have any idea how he's still working for the company?!
We're on a very tight budget, but with the alternate phone and internet service we changed to we're now paying double what we were going to simply because I refuse to deal with a company that employs such dicks. Get this- we now have to wait until JUNE 23 to get internet!!! [yep, 3 weeks longer than what I thought was ridiculous] Obviously I would have gone with Telus if they weren't so horrible. [Telus, are you hearing me?- SHAPE UP! In this economy you do not want to be losing customers] Even Fireman refused to entertain the thought of giving them our money after hearing how the conversation went.
So. I don't want other people to deal with this crap. No one deserves to be spoken to like I was and certainly not by a company wanting your money!
What am I going to do about it? Well I'm not going to take Anthony to court [as he advised me- and I had only asked for his name!!!], but I'm certainly going to get into contact with Telus- as high up as I can as obviously the 'supervisors' are useless.
Yes, I'm also going to reccomend avoiding Telus. Normally I wouldn't do this, but after the stories I've heard [and had tried to forget] and my own experience today, I seriously encourage you to think twice... or three or four times (!) about dealing with them. Unless you love being on hold, stress up past your eyeballs, and paying the salary of people you don't want your kids around, they're not the company for you [or me, or anyone].
Anyone else have other ideas? What else can/should I do? I've worked customer service [a LOT of it] and I've even been the one on the other end of the phone helping call-ins-> I understand there are difficult customers and it can be a really tough job, but even if I'd been nasty to him or he'd had a horrible customer before me, I wouldn't have deserved what was said.
What a waste of time, tears, and energy!
Btw- shoutout to the awesome customer service with Delta Cable [Holly in particular].
I'd love to hear what y'all think about this. What are the rules on posting someone's full name [and employee number] so others can avoid them? Telus- if someone from the company is reading this, send me an email; you fix this and offer a sincere and appropriate apology and I will post a follow up to this.
ARGHHHH! After trying to pack with a toddler running rampant all day I really didn't need this crap.
Don't lose your lunches this weekend! PakNak feature
On long weekends and throughout the summer parks and beaches are filled with families out for picnics, barbeques, parties and festivals. Kids need to eat and generally quite frequently, so there's usually a bag of food or snacks in tow.
How many times have you run into families with the same bag? How many times have you [or your child] accidentally grabbed the wrong bag?! It's frustrating, embarrassing, and can be very unfortunate.
I was sent an awesome product to test out that solves this problem! PakNak is a mom based startup, and is simply brilliant. I remember all too well as a kid wanting a new backpack every year because my old one was 'boring'... give your child a couple of PakNaks and problem solved [for a lot less]!

PakNaks are rubbery [silicone?] ornaments for bags, books, toys... whatever you can think of! Each little PakNak comes packaged with a card describing the creature- their name, favorite thing to do, etc- it's really cute!
With each PakNak is also a velcro circle- this is how the ornament attaches. You peel the backing off one end, and stick it to your bag. You then apply your PakNak, and voila! The velcro circle that you attach to the bag is really secure- I had no worries pulling my PakNak off to switch designs.
We got to try out the "Kyla Jane" butterfly, the "Ted the Head" frog, and the "Pinky" [starfish?]. Each was extremely cute, and the detail was incredible. The rubbery animal was smooth and flexible, and held up to Ladybug 'testing' it with her teeth [*please note- these are marketed for 4+ due to the fact that they are so flexible and rather small].
Each PakNak is only $3.99; I feel they're fully worth their value and plan on getting more.
Guess what?! THREE of my readers get to try some of their own!
PakNak has offered three lucky winners four PakNaks of their choice!!

Frusterated this long weekend? Nipple Seal review and giveaway
While out and about this long weekend, I’m sure many of you have experienced [or will!] the frustration of a leaking bottle. In a bag, the car, or your stroller, a leaking bottle is a pain. Neither breastmilk or formula are really liquids you want spread over your belongings, and the lids that come with the bottles never stay on [at least not for me!].
What's the solution?
Mom and Dad pair Elizabeth and Michael came up with the perfect idea! Born out of necessity, these parents to two young daughters invented a special device to stop the leaks while traveling. Nipple Seal was designed in their basement then taken to production!
Nipple Seals have been designed with safety in mind- Michael and Elizabeth have kept their product as ‘green’ as possible [and y’all know how much I like that!] by designing/molding/manufacturing locally [in Vancouver WA] and using local resources. They’re BPA and lead free and use only FDA approved plastics.
So they’re safe… but are they cute? You betcha! The seal itself is a white plastic, and all of the attaching ribbons are great: plain, polka dots, stripes… something for everyone.
Elizabeth and Michael sent me one to test, and test I did. I didn’t want to lead you astray, so I sealed up a bottle and shook, then I dropped it, kicked it, threw it in my bag, and basically tried my best to get it to leak. No such luck. The seal attaches to your carseat, purse, stroller, etc, and stays put.
This is a great product, and a necessity for any parent who uses bottles. Once in awhile or constantly, a bottle using family needs one!
Here’s some great news… Michael and Elizabeth have generously offered TWO of my readers a Nipple Seal of their choice! I’m so pleased to be sharing this with someone- I love it and want to share the great find!
How to enter:
Go to Nipple Seal and give me some feedback on their site: is it easy to use, would you like to see anything else, etc. OR Tell me which stores or internet sites you think would be a good fit for Nipple Seals.
[do both for 3 entries! Leave the first two entries in comments, then the third comment say "Bonus for answering both"]

Fun Friday!
Happy Friday everyone! To all my american readers I wish you a wonderful long weekend!
A few weeks ago I told you about a new site I found that hosted on-line adlib forms; these are just too fun to not do again, so in honor of the long weekend, here's my newest version: [fill out the form yourself here]
"The Camping Trip"
It was a cold, prickly night. Anna and Sarah hiked around the campfire, burping songs and eating corn on the cob.
Soon they got tired, climbed into their librarians, and eventually fell asleep. Suddenly, they were both wide awake. There was a loud dancing sound outside the tent. Sarah grabbed Anna's elbow and held on for dear life. Anna started chanting, “Lions and dogs and cameras, oh my!” over and over again.
Then into their tent fell their friend Heather. Heather had been thirsty and had gone into the house for some lemonade. Now the lemonade was on the floor of their tent. But they all had a good laugh and went back to sleep.
It turned out to be a very slippery camping trip. And maybe next time they'll even leave Sarah's backyard.
I'm always surprised how well the answers work!
Now for the grownups: you know what else is fun? Winning stuff! Check out all of my Summer Warm-up giveaways on now... lots already, still more to come!
